Plastic Surgery

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty reshapes the bone and cartilage of the nose so that it sits in proportion with the rest of the face, and can correct breathing problems in the same operation. It is planned in Istanbul by our plastic surgeon after a detailed look at both the outside and the inside of the nose.

Rhinoplasty

What Rhinoplasty Can Change

People usually ask about rhinoplasty because of a hump on the bridge, a wide or drooping tip, uneven nostrils or a nose that became crooked after an injury. The goal is a nose that looks natural on your face rather than a set template. When a deviated septum makes breathing difficult, the inside of the nose can be corrected during the same operation, which is why the airway is examined at the consultation as well as the shape.

Who It Suits

Rhinoplasty is for adults whose facial growth has finished, usually by the late teens, and who have realistic expectations. It is postponed for anyone with an active nasal or sinus infection, a bleeding disorder or an uncontrolled long-term illness. If you only want to soften a small hump, nose filler is an option to ask about, but filler cannot make the nose smaller or improve breathing. Smokers are asked to stop before and after surgery because smoking slows healing.

How the Operation Is Done

The operation takes about an hour and a half under general anesthesia, followed by one night in hospital. In the open technique a small incision is made on the strip of skin between the nostrils; in the closed technique every incision stays inside the nose. The hump is reduced, the tip is shaped with cartilage and the nasal bones are narrowed when needed. Consultation and surgical planning at our Etiler clinic are carried out by plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon Op. Dr. Toygar Ünveren.

Recovery

Expect swelling of the nose and bruising around the eyes during the first week. The external splint usually comes off after about seven days, and most people are back at a desk within one to two weeks. Heavy exercise and anything that risks a knock to the nose should wait several weeks. The nose takes most of its new shape within a few months, while the last subtle swelling at the tip can take up to a year to settle, depending on skin thickness.

Risks to Discuss

Like any operation, rhinoplasty carries risks of bleeding, infection and reactions to anesthesia. Other possibilities include prolonged swelling, small asymmetries, temporary numbness of the tip, a blocked feeling in the nose for a while and, rarely, a shape problem that needs a revision operation. Bleeding that does not stop, a high fever, worsening pain or shortness of breath after surgery need urgent medical attention.

Planning Your Trip to Istanbul

If you are traveling from abroad, the first consultation can be held remotely before you book your trip, so you arrive with a clear plan. Plan your stay around the first follow-up visit, when the splint is removed about a week after surgery; your surgeon confirms the timing for your case before you travel.
