Liposuction

Liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise through fine cannulas inserted via tiny openings. It is a body contouring operation, not a weight-loss method, most often used on the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, arms and under the chin.

Liposuction

Contouring, Not Weight Loss

Fat tends to collect in certain areas because of genetics and hormones and can stay there even after weight loss. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the treated area, which makes the body's contours more balanced. The remaining fat cells can still grow if you gain weight, so keeping a stable weight is what preserves the result.

Who It Suits

It suits adults close to their ideal weight whose skin is still elastic. If the skin is loose, removing fat alone can make sagging more visible, and liposuction may be combined with a skin-removing operation such as a tummy tuck. For smaller fat excesses, our non-surgical body shaping treatments may be an alternative. Liposuction is not done during pregnancy, with uncontrolled heart disease, diabetes or bleeding disorders, or with a history of blood clots.

How the Operation Is Done

Depending on the size of the area, the operation is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation and usually takes about two hours, followed by one night in hospital. A fluid that loosens the fat and reduces bleeding is introduced first, then the fat is suctioned through openings a few millimeters wide, shaping a contour that blends with the surrounding tissue. Plastic surgeon Op. Dr. Toygar Ünveren assesses skin elasticity and decides which areas can be treated safely in one session.

Recovery

The treated areas are swollen, bruised and sore, much like after a hard workout. A compression garment is worn for several weeks to control swelling and help the skin adapt. Most people return to desk work after about a week, while strenuous exercise waits a few weeks. The final result shows once the swelling has fully settled, which takes a few months.

Risks to Discuss

Contour irregularities, differences between the two sides, prolonged swelling, temporary numbness, fluid collection and infection can occur. Treating large areas raises the risk of fluid imbalance and blood clots, which is why the amount removed in one session is kept within safe limits. Early walking and good hydration help, and one-sided leg swelling, chest pain or shortness of breath need urgent care.

Planning Your Trip to Istanbul

If you are traveling from abroad, the first consultation can be held remotely before you book your trip, so you arrive with a clear plan. Let your surgeon know in advance about blood thinners, the contraceptive pill and herbal supplements, as some need adjusting before surgery.
