Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia surgery corrects enlarged breasts in men by removing excess fat with liposuction and the firm glandular tissue through a small incision at the edge of the areola. The aim is a flatter, more masculine chest.

Gland, Fat or Both
Male breast enlargement can come from glandular tissue, from fat, or most often from a mix of the two; enlargement from fat alone is called pseudogynecomastia. Hormonal changes are the usual trigger, and in adults excess weight, some medications, anabolic steroids, certain supplements, liver or kidney disease and hormonal disorders can be involved. Glandular tissue does not shrink with diet or exercise, which is when surgery is considered.
Who It Suits
It suits healthy men whose enlargement has persisted and whose weight is stable. Because enlargement that starts in puberty often fades on its own, surgery in teenagers is usually postponed. If a medication or substance is causing the enlargement, that is addressed first with your doctor, and a one-sided, firm or fast-growing lump is investigated before any surgery. Breast ultrasound, hormone tests or a specialist opinion may be requested.
How the Operation Is Done
The operation takes about 100 minutes, under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation depending on the extent. Fat in the chest and toward the armpit is removed through tiny openings with fine cannulas, then the firm gland under the nipple is taken out through a small incision along the lower edge of the areola, where the scar blends into the natural color border. In advanced cases with loose skin, excess skin is removed as well. Planning is done by plastic surgeon Op. Dr. Toygar Ünveren at our Etiler clinic.
Recovery
Swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal, and a compression vest is worn for several weeks to control swelling and help the skin settle. Most men return to desk work within a short time, while chest workouts and contact sports wait a few weeks. The final contour becomes clear over a few months.
Risks to Discuss
Bleeding or fluid collection, infection, changes in nipple sensation, small differences between the sides and contour irregularities can occur. Removing too much tissue can leave a hollow under the nipple and too little can leave fullness, so tissue removal is carefully balanced. Removed gland does not grow back, but weight gain, hormonal disorders or steroid use can cause new growth.
Planning Your Trip to Istanbul
If you are traveling from abroad, the first consultation can be held remotely before you book your trip, so you arrive with a clear plan. Bring or plan for the compression vest you will wear for the following weeks, and arrange your return around the first follow-up check.
